Manama: A policeman will stand trial on charges of transgressing regulations in arrest operations, the head of the Special Investigation Unit has said.

The policeman is facing charges of killing Fadhel Abbas and injuring another in the village of Al Markh and will appear before the High Criminal Court on August 21, Nawaf Hamza said.

According to the case papers, the policeman was among the officers tasked on January 8 with arresting four suspects for possessing firearms with the intent to carry out an act of terrorism.

Two of the suspects were seen driving a car in Al Markh area and when the police tried to stop the vehicle, they ignored the orders and attempted to speed away.

The defendant opened fire and shot several times, killing Fadhel Abbas who was driving the car.

His behaviour was considered a transgression of the rules to prevent a suspect from fleeing and of the performance of duty as stipulated by the law.

The defendant also wounded another suspect as the police were trying to arrest him, the case documents said.

The Special Investigation Unit demanded punishing the suspect according to articles 75/4, 107, 333/1 and 339/1 of the Penal Code.
