Manama: Four cars were targeted in a bomb detonated by unidentified assailants in Hamad town, 25 kilometres south of Manama, Bahrain's interior ministry said.

Tarek Mubarak Bin Deynah, head of public security, said: "A terrorist attack was carried out on Tuesday morning in Hamad town targeting cars parked on the driveway of a house belonging to people working for security agencies".

"The cars were charred and damaged to various extents and the explosion caused panic among the residents of the area," he was quoted as saying by the Bahrain News Agency (BNA). No one was injured in the attack.

Authorities have started investigating, Bin Deynah said. Al Wefaq, Bahrain's largest society, condemned the "heinous attack regardless of the motives and causes" and expressed its "full sympathy with the Bahraini citizen and his family".

Security forceson Wednesday foiled a plot to set off car bombs at "vital sites" in Bahrain, a spokesman was quoted by BNA as saying.

"Two people were arrested for planning, preparing and beginning to arm cars with explosive devices as part of a terrorist plan aimed at destabilising Bahrain," the official said.

The plot was to have been carried out during Eid Al Fitr, the holiday marking the end of Ramadan. The spokesman said the terrorists had targeted "10 well-chosen sites". The latest incident comes 10 days after Bahrain charged 23 activists with forming a "terror network" aimed at toppling the government.
