Bahrain set the record for the world's largest flag when it unveiled a gigantic flag at a ceremony behind the National Stadium in Eisa town here yesterday.

Laura Hughes, a record researcher from the Guinness Book of World Records arrived from London to officially measure the flag.

She announced that it broke Pakistan's record that was set last August.

"The flag is 169.5 metres long and 97.1 metres wide, thus covering an area of 1,6458.45 square metres," she said.

"The previous record had been set in August by Pakistan which introduced a 1,6099.44 square metre flag in Karachi," she added.

The flag, which weighs 3,200 kg, was flown from China to Bahrain by DHL and is to be presented by MTC-Vodafone (Bahrain) to His Majesty the King on the occasion of the 33rd National Day that will be celebrated on December 16.

It was made in China by Jiaxing Maosen Flag Company and required approximately 13,500 metres of fabric.
