Manama: Al Wefaq Society, the largest bloc in Bahrain's lower house, will chair two important decision-making committees and the public utilities and environment committee.

The bloc's number two man, deputy Khalil Marzooq, was Wednesday elected chairman of the legislative and legal affairs committee after Al Wefaq leader Shaikh Ali Salman said he would not be running. Sources told Gulf News the charismatic leader's busy schedule was the main reason for not seeking the post.

The influential financial and economic affairs committee was carried by Dr Abdul Aziz Abul, an independent who was strongly backed by Al Wefaq during the parliamentary elections, who beat Eisa Abul Fateh in a closely-disputed contest.

The public utilities and environment committee will also be chaired by Al Wefaq deputy, Jawad Fairuz.

The council's second largest bloc, Salafi Al Asala Society, will lead the powerful foreign affairs, defence and national security committee through Shaikh Adel Al Mouawda while the other Sunni society, Al Menbar, will be in charge of the services committee.

The election of the five chairmen consolidated the grip of Islamists on the high-profile posts within the Council of Representatives.
