Manama: One week before the start of the national dialogue, Al Wefaq, the largest opposition political society, has yet to decide whether it would take an active role in the talks.

"As regards our possible participation in the dialogue, I will confine myself to saying that there is no official decision by Al Wefaq on whether we will take part or not," Khalil Al Marzooq, a senior member of the society, said on Wednesday.

Al Marzooq who represented Al Wefaq in the 2006 - 2010 lower chamber and was deputy speaker in the current chamber until he resigned alongside the other 17 Al Wefaq lawmakers in February, said that his society supported the principle of the dialogue.

"We did welcome the invitation by King Hamad Bin Eisa Al Khalifa to a serious and fruitful dialogue, and we still welcome it. We believe in the importance of preparing the right conditions for such a dialogue," he told reporters.

However, Al Marzooq said that the dialogue should be an extension of the call issued by the Crown Prince in March and which included seven principles.

The national dialogue, set to start in early July, is to be chaired by Khalifa Al Dhahrani, the lower chamber speaker.

The opposition liberal societies have said that they would take part in the dialogue.
