Karachi: A claim by Sindh Information Technology Minister Taimur Talpur that Google Maps was developed by the Sindh IT Department has been ridiculed on social media.

Talpur made the claim while recently speaking during the question hour at the Sindh Assembly. He said that Sindh government was behind the development of Google Maps and its traffic display system. He also informed the house that it had provided assistance to establish an FM radio station to provide real-time traffic updates to motorists in Karachi.

Later, he released a special video message saying he was immensely happy that his statement provided so many people the opportunity to laugh. He said that he was happy that his statement became the basis of thousands of tweets and comments on social media.

Talpur said he wanted to inform the concerned lawmakers about the existence of a “Smart Room” developed by the Sindh IT Department which uses a network of 600 surveillance cameras of different agencies including that of the traffic police to get real-time updates about the traffic situation in Karachi.
