Patna: A man in Bihar quit his attractive job as a probationary officer with a government-owned commercial bank to become a gangster to make a fast buck.

Atul Vats, who owns a bachelor degree in technology and computer science, is the kingpin of an interstate racket charging huge amounts helping students crack medical and engineering tests.

Police said the gang had been charging in between Rs6 million to Rs10 million to help a student pass the National Eligibility Entrance test (Undergraduate) or NEET, an entrance examination in India for students who wish to study undergraduate medical courses, and around Rs1 million from an aspirant who wanted to pass engineering tests. They had been providing scholars who would sit the examinations in place of the candidates.

The entire story came to light after the police raided an apartment located in the heart of Patna and arrested six persons who were part of the racket. However, Vats still remains out of reach of the police. “Arrested persons are dreaded crooks experts in hacking exam-related servers. They were running the rackets in many Indian cities like Mumbai, Jaipur, Delhi but the kingpin of the gang is still absconding,” Patna’s senior superintendent of police Upendra Sharma told the media on Tuesday.

According to the police, Vats had got the job of a probationary officer (PO) with a nationalised bank in 2014 and was posted with the Digha (Patna) branch of the bank but he quit kust a year after in a bid to get rich quick.

“He earned huge money (from this racket) which he has invested in hotel business, flats and real estate. His networks are spread across various states. We are investigating the matter,” said a police official involved in the investigation.

Reports said initially the gangster wanted to become a doctor but after failing in his mission, he cleared the PO examination yet he was not satisfied with this job. Eventually, he formed a gang to help students clear prestigious exams by charging hefty amounts. The gang had been supplying solvers/scholars to the candidates for this purpose. According to the police, his gang has also cyber experts who would hack the system at the examination centres.

“We have the information that they (gang) replaced at least 10 andidates with scholars,” Patna City SP Vinay Tiwari told the local media adding they are gathering more details about this gang.

The kingpin’s wife who holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degrees also helped trap students willing to become doctors. Vats had been asking the candidates to deposit money in his wife’s bank accounts.
