Dubai: In a shocking incident, a man tied his 11-year-old son upside down, thrashed him ruthlessly, and poured hot water on the child for stealing wheat from home and selling it at a shop for sweets, on Friday evening in Maveli village of Jagner area of Agra district, in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

Despite repeated requests from onlookers to stop the punishment, the agitated man continued to cane his son. The video has gone viral online and has outraged social media users.

A Twitter user @jdey63 posted: "People are losing it and taking out their frustrations on helpless children, their spouses, poor, vulnerable people. Government has to come in and address these problems. Sad to see such brutality with people watching and making videos."

According to Agra district superintendent of Police, Ravi Kumar, the accused was annoyed with his eldest son. He said that the man became hostile and started beating his child. He also added that the man has three children.

The accused had also recently fought with his wife, and she deserted him and went to her sister's house, reportedly.

Talking to a news source, officials said: "The accused is now being interrogated. We will take appropriate action."

The man has confessed to being under the influence of alcohol while committing the crime.

A case was filed against the man under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
