Patna: A teenage girl in Bihar committed suicide hours after she was raped by a local youth. The incident comes amid nationwide outrage over the death of a Dalit girl after she was allegedly gang-raped and tortured in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district.
Police said the 13-year-old girl, a resident of Chanan police station area in Lakhisarai district, was alone in her home on Tuesday when a local youth reached her and said his sister wanted to meet her. She didn’t suspect his intention since his sister was her childhood friend.

However, when she reached her friend’s home, the youth locked her inside and allegedly raped her. He also threatened to kill her if she dared to reveal it to anyone. But, the victim fell seriously sick after the incident and also informed her parents about the incident after which they rushed her to the local police station to register a case against the accused.
“When we returned to our home from the police station, we found our daughter hanging from the ceiling with the help of a scarf. She ended her life unable to bear ignominy,” her parents told the police.
Raids carried out
The police have registered the case and launched raids to nab the accused. “We conducted raids at the residence of the accused but his home was found locked. The accused will be caught soon,” local police station in-charge Vaibhav Kumar told the media today.
Last week, a teenage rape victim from Kishanganj district had given birth to a baby in the office of a senior police official in Bihar where she had gone to register a complaint case against the rapist after failing to get justice from the local village court.
Bihar has been flooded with rape cases despite all the tall talks by the state government to establish a rule of law in the state. According to a report compiled by the state police department, a total of 11,759 rape cases were reported in the past 10 years while in the past five years, altogether 6,848 rape cases were reported.
This year along, as many as 825 rape cases have been reported till July, which means an average four incidents of rape are taking place every day.
