New Delhi : Strong winds, dust storms, and heavy rain swept across Delhi and the NCR on Friday morning, delaying around 120 flights.

In a tragic rain-related incident in Delhi’s Dwarka, four people — a woman and her three children — were killed and one person injured after strong winds caused a neem tree to collapse onto a tubewell room at a farm in Kharkhari Canal village.

With assistance from the police and fire brigade, the victims were rescued from the debris and taken to RTR Hospital in Jafferpur Kalan, where all four were pronounced dead.

The deceased have been identified as Jyoti, 26, and her three children. The injured person, Ajay—Jyoti's husband—sustained minor injuries, according to Delhi Police.

Police said they received a PCR call regarding the collapse of a tubewell room.

Earlier today, heavy rain lashed parts of Delhi in the early hours, causing waterlogging and traffic disruptions across many areas of the national capital.

IMD issues alert, warns of strong winds

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert, warning of severe weather conditions across Delhi-NCR and urging residents to stay safe.

According to the advisory, people are advised to remain indoors and avoid travel unless necessary. The IMD also recommends seeking shelter in a safe location, avoiding trees and exposed concrete structures, and unplugging electrical and electronic devices to prevent damage or injury. Additionally, residents are urged to stay away from water bodies and avoid contact with conductive objects.

Flights affected as airport issues advisory

Due to inclement weather and thunderstorms in Delhi, several flights at Delhi Airport have been affected, officials said.

“Our on-ground teams are working closely with all stakeholders to ensure a smooth passenger experience. Travellers are advised to contact their respective airlines for the latest flight updates,” the airport said in an advisory posted on X.

Weather impacts parts of Haryana, UP, and Rajasthan

The storm system extended beyond Delhi, affecting parts of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Cities such as Panipat, Mathura, Agra, and Bharatpur reported rain, lightning, and strong winds.

Waterlogging, traffic snarls across the capital

Visuals from Khanpur showed vehicles struggling through knee-deep water. In RK Puram, uprooted trees blocked roads, further slowing down traffic. At DDU Marg, a commuter told ANI, “The rain is a relief, but I’ve been stuck here since 5 a.m. due to traffic and an accident.”

Commuters, schoolchildren face challenges

Somvir, a commuter coming from Minto Bridge, said, “There’s waterlogging under the bridge. Bikes and autos are breaking down. We had to turn back.” Schoolchildren and officegoers were also seen navigating flooded streets and struggling to catch transport.

Rain, snowfall forecast in hill states

The IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall and snowfall in the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand over the coming week due to an active Western Disturbance. This may result in a 3–4°C drop in temperatures.

Weather warnings persist across India

Between April 30 and May 2, thunderstorms and heavy rainfall warnings remain in effect across northern, eastern, northeastern, and peninsular India. Hailstorms are likely in Karnataka and parts of Odisha. Meanwhile, heatwave conditions persist in western Rajasthan, Punjab, and parts of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.
