Patna: A bride in Bihar reached the house of her would-be life partner with a wedding procession after the groom refused to visit her home, citing COVID-19 fears.

The wedding of Jyoti Kumari and Sunil Kumar was scheduled for May 31, and the girl’s family began making preparations for welcoming the guests.

Reports said a day before the wedding, the groom called up the bride’s family and expressed his inability to come with a wedding procession, citing fears of COVID-19. He also informed them about how the Bihar government had enforced a total lockdown in the state and had allowed only 20 people to attend the wedding.

On hearing this, the bride told her father to convey to her would-be father-in-law that she was ready to visit his home with the wedding guests, if they could not come over. The groom’s family accepted her proposal.

On Monday, the bride led a wedding procession to the house of the groom in Sheohar where she was accorded a grand welcome. The wedding was solemnized at a local temple in the presence of guests and family members according to COVID-19 protocol. After the wedding, the bride stayed at her in-laws’ home while the guests returned.

“It was an interesting wedding in our village. We enjoyed it a lot,” local deputy village council chief Shivnath Gupta said.

The pandemic has drastically changed wedding trends in the state. The families are not only inviting a limited number of guests at the weddings but are also keeping it simple, thanks to the restrictions in place.

Another interesting wedding was reported last month from Bhagalpur district where a groom reached the wedding alone on a bicycle to ensure the event does not become a suprespreader.
