New city-wide regulation limits the number of pets, requires registration, chipping
Bangkok fur-parents will need to do more than just belly rubs and snack breaks — a new city law will require all dogs and cats to be registered and microchipped.
The new rules kick in on January 10, 2026.
Miss the deadline? You might be in the doghouse (literally), though the city hasn’t quite spilled the beans on what the penalties will be, as per Bangkok Post.
Here’s the leash-length version of the rules:
Pets must be microchipped within 120 days of birth or 30 days after adoption.
The number of furry companions allowed? It depends on your living space.
Living in an apartment or condo under 80 sqm? You can have just one pet. Over 80 sqm? You're allowed two.
Own a house? Pet quotas range from 2 to 6, depending on land area. (Bigger yard = more woofs and meows.)
Farm animals? Keep the cows and chickens in designated zones.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration says it’s all about public safety and cutting down the stray population.
Rules for Rottweilers, pit bulls
Got a breed with bite? Owners of so-called “dangerous” dogs — like pit bulls and Rottweilers — are required to report them to local district offices for extra supervision.
The law was published in the Royal Gazette in January and kicks in next year.
Until then: Time to get your four-legged friends ready for their chip check-up.
