Dubai motorists are being given yet another alternative roadway to help dilute heavy traffic congestion, says the city's traffic authority.

The Roads and Traffic Authority will open on Friday a new Dh350 million six-lane stretch of highway that extends the existing Outer Bypass Road southerly for another 25 kilometres to the Jebel Ali area.

The new Dubai Bypass Road extension begins at a new interchange constructed at Dubai Outlet Mall on Al Ain Road and goes southerly to Al Hebab Road.

“What we are opening Friday is just a small part of the overall bypass road,'' said Yahya Khalid in an interview. “This new road will provide smooth and safe transportation for all.''

The new highway section will enable drivers to completely bypass heavy traffic on Emirates Road or Shaikh Zayed Road.

Eventually, the new section will be linked with yet another 25-kilometre section of highway now under construction further to the south towards Abu Dhabi.

Motorists who want to enter Dubai from Abu Dhabi will eventually be able to use the bypass road to circumvent all of the heavier traffic closer to the Gulf coast, the RTA said.

In a statement, Maitha Bin Adai, CEO of the RTA's roads and traffic department, said that the full length of the bypass road should be done by the end of this year.

The bypass road is “viewed as part of the RTA strategy and sustained efforts to keep pace with the urban expansion,'' Bin Adai said.

The RTA, meanwhile, continues to widen to six lanes in each direction the existing bypass road from Sharjah to Al Rawiya at Dubai, she said.
