Wooden dhow catches fire in Sharjah

Firefighters rush to the site and contain the blaze

Sharjah:  A wooden dhow caught fire at Khalid Lagoon in Sharjah on Thursday.

Colonel Sami Khamis Al Naqbi, Director of Sharjah Civil Defence, told Gulf News that firefighters reached the site within minutes and brought the blaze under control, along with with firefighter boats from Khalid port. 

Dark plumes of smoke billowing from the burning boat could be seen from a distance.

The fire was  brought under control in 30 minutes.

Col. Al Naqbi said no causalities were reported in the accident.

The site has been handed over to the forensic experts to investigate the cause of the fire.

Gas leakage in Sharjah

Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident, Sharjah Civil Defence averted another tragedy by containing gas leakage in a building under construction in Al Nahda, near Al Nahda Park on Thursday. The leakage was caused by the workers in the site who hit a pipe carrying gas by mistake.

Col. Al Naqbi said that Civil Defence operation room received the call at 11.50 am. Civil Defence along Sharjah Police secured the place and controlled the leakage. The gas supply was disconnected from main station.
