This city is old, traditional and familiar, yet it is also modern, vibrant and seems different every time we come here.
It is a city totally geared for tourists, with well-informed cabbies, clear directions at the tube stations and the famous red double-decker buses. You cannot get lost here; but if you do, there's always a friendly Bobby to give you directions.
We started with our favourite place, the West End. We were lucky to get tickets for Filumena at the Piccadilly Theatre; Dame Judi's performance was spellbinding! Afterwards we had an 'Indian Fusion' meal at Chor Bizzare, which is now popular as Chutney Mary.
St. Paul's Cathedral, Westminster, the pigeons at Trafalgar Square, the street market on Petticoat Lane and all the other landmarks are just as we remembered them from our last visit five years ago. At Madame Tussaud's there were some new celebrities, though our favourite is still the tired lady asleep on the bench near the exit.
But the city has changed in many ways. Dominating the skyline are a giant Ferris wheel and the Millennium Dome nearby. The new focus of artistic attention is The Modern Tate with a work titled I do, I undo and I redo at the entrance and Jerry Hall's Mrs Robinson is the talk of the town.
Thankfully, some things never change. Sitting on a bench in Hyde Park, listening to the animated speakers on their soap boxes and tucking into greasy fish and chips, we feel completely at home.
Having a great time, wish you were here.
