Dubai: Fog covered parts of the UAE on Wednesday morning, causing traffic jams on key roads as visibility dropped to a few metres in some areas.

In Abu Dhabi, the foggy conditions caused 16 cars to crash on one stretch of road. No casualties were reported but those involved in the incidents escaped with minor injuries.

In Ras Al Khaimah, an Emirati man was killed when his car overturned on Al Liwa Road.

Ras Al Khaimah Police said that the victim, identified as A.R.H., was driving in high speed when his car tyre burst, causing him to lose control of the vehicle, which crashed into a concrete pole before overturning several times.

In Dubai, traffic was slow moving as heavy fog descended on Shaikh Zayed Road, Ras Al Khor Road, Al Meydan Road and Al Wasl Road.

Parts of Sharjah were also covered by early-morning fog. Heavy traffic was reported in the National Paints area. Commuters between Sharjah and Dubai reported delays of more than an hour as they made their way to work.

According to the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology, visibility was less than 100 metres in Sharjah, 300 metres in Dubai, and 500 metres in Abu Dhabi.

Conditions gradually improved throughout the morning but forecasters say similar conditions are expected over the next few days.

The weather is expected to become hot and sunny on Wednesday afternoon, but the Dubai Meteorological Office said that high humidity and fog is expected in the evening, with chances of more fog forming overnight.

The maximum temperature is expected to reach 38 degrees Celcius, with a drop in temperature expected to hit a low of 25 degrees Celcius.
