UN to look into racial intolerance in the UAE

Abu Dhabi: Githu Muigai, UN special rapporteur will be in UAE to look into contemporary forms of racism and racial intolerance.

During his two week visit, Muigai, a Kenyan human rights lawyer who was appointed last year in August will interact with representatives from government bodies and non-governmental organisations, academics, victims of alleged abuses and others.

A visit of this nature to the UAE by the UN was also confirmed by Dr Anwar Gargash, the Minister of State for Foreign and Federal National Council Affairs, before the UN's HRC in Geneva in March.

In his address he had said:'' Official invitations have been sent to special rapporteurs on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography, as well as contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance.''

UN special rapporteurs make reports after every visit to various countries. These reports are then submitted to the UN's Human Rights Council, where they are discussed by member states and the country in question.
