The UAE will join peace-freedom-and justice-loving countries to commemorate the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which recognised the inherent dignity and the equal and inalienable rights of all people in all nations.

On December 10, 1948, the international community adopted the Declaration.

Major General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, police and civil defense officials and dignitaries will attend a ceremony to be held at the Dubai Police Officers' Club in Garhoud tomorrow .

"The anniversary of this historic Declaration provides an opportunity to look back on many accomplishments and to consider the lessons learned over the past years in the promotion and protection of human rights," said Major Dr Mohammed Al Mur, Director of the Human Rights Department.

"Participants will review principles of the declaration as compared to that of Islam, which ensure equality of people before Almighty Allah and that only Allah fearing and not colour or race differentiate between people.

The life, honour and property of all citizens in a Muslim society are considered sacred whether the person is Muslim or not. Racism and sexism are incomprehensible to Muslims, for the Holy Quran speaks of human equality in the following terms:

O mankind! We created you from a single soul, male and female, and made you into peoples and tribes, so that you may come to know one another. Truly, the most honoured of you in God's sight is the greatest of you in piety.

Major Dr Al Mur said that the Human Rights Department's motto for this year provides for relieving suffering of inmates in prisons and educating them on their rights.

He urged members of thinktanks to attend the ceremony, which will also feature a presentation of the new building of the Penal Institutions Department, inmate products fair and art works by Dubai Educational District.
