Hydra, the UAE's first chess software on the lines of Deep Blue which shared honours with chess great Garry Kasparov, made a magnificent debut winning the 13th International Paderborn Computer Chess Championship (IPCCC) 20043 in Germany on Sunday.

Created under the patronage of Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan by the Abu Dhabi-based PAL Group, Hydra is a software developed here with help from three international programmers.

Hydra took part in the annual championship in Padeborn, Germany and outclassed a strong line-up of like-built rivals including the internationally acclaimed Shredder and Fritz, winners of previous IPCCC championships.

"Hydra won six games and drew one to emerge as the new chess monster that is ready to throw a challenge to humans," said Basar Shueb of the PAL Group.

"This mixture of hardware and software developed by us with the support of three programmers Chrilly Donninger, Ulf Lorenz and Erdogan Gunes is much advanced than Deep Blue," added Basar.

After Sunday's triumph, Hydra has been reportedly awarded an ELO rating of 2967 and Kasparov's is 2836.

An eye-opener on the rating
Arpad Elo's biggest contribution to chess organisation was the development of the rating system that now bears his name.

There were many rating systems in use before Arpad Elo came along, some numeric and others using other means to rank players.

Elo's big achievement was to come up with a new rating system that retained some superficial characteristics (like the 1500 rating point intended to designate an average player, the 2000 rating point designating a strong club player and the 2500 point designating a grandmaster level player), but it devised a statistically sound foundation for the system.
