Drivers are advised to expect delays and seek alternative routes if possible
Commuters travelling along Emirates Road have recently encountered heavier traffic congestion than usual as the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) pushes forward with a significant infrastructure enhancement campaign across Dubai. Several partial road closures and traffic diversions have been implemented, particularly affecting Emirates Road and other key routes, resulting in notable delays — especially during peak travel times.
Traffic diversions are currently in place on Emirates Road in the direction of Sharjah, specifically between the Dubai–Al Ain Road interchange and the Ras Al Khor–Al Awir Road interchange. These measures, which took effect on June 9, are expected to remain in place until August 30, 2025. The RTA has installed clear signage and deployed traffic management systems to help guide motorists safely through detour routes.
According to the RTA, these disruptions are a temporary but necessary step in a broader initiative to modernize and expand Dubai's road network. The comprehensive upgrade campaign focuses on improving traffic flow, increasing road capacity, and enhancing overall safety for both motorists and pedestrians. The project includes road widening works, the reconstruction of critical interchanges, upgrades to pedestrian infrastructure, and the integration of advanced innovative traffic systems.
During the construction period, the RTA is advising motorists to consider alternative routes and plan their journeys accordingly. Public transportation options, including the Dubai Metro and intercity bus services, are being promoted as viable alternatives to help reduce road congestion.
To ease the impact of the closures, the RTA is offering real-time traffic updates through its official mobile app, website, and social media channels.
The RTA is expected to provide more updates in the coming weeks as progress continues on this critical infrastructure initiative.
