Dubai: Whether you’re at the petrol station’s mini mart, outside a bank, or at your local restaurant waiting for takeout, motorists should never leave their car engines – not even for a couple of minutes.

The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department has released a video warning motorists on how to prevent auto thefts, and explained that the simplest, most efficient way is by switching the car engine off.

The awareness video, which was posted online on Tuesday night, shows an Emirati woman driving in a hurry to reach home.

But the woman has to make a quick stop at the supermarket first, and quickly parks her car outside the shop.

As the woman runs into the store, a pedestrian spots the empty vehicle and seizes the chance to jump into the car and drive away.

Little does the thief know that a young child is sitting in the back seat.

Earlier on Wednesday, Police announced that two Arab suspects were arrested for stealing cars in Ajman and other nearby emirates.

Major Ahmad Saeed Al Nuaimi, Director of Ajman’s Criminal and Investigation Department, said that police first received a report of a stolen vehicle from an Asian man.

The victim reported that his car was parked in front of his home at night, but by the next morning, had gone missing.

The keys were not left in the vehicle, according to police.

An investigation was launched into the missing vehicle and Ajman Police soon discovered that two brothers had stolen the car, and intended to sell it for spare parts.

The case was referred to Public Prosecution.
