A traffic city is to be built in Abu Dhabi, an official said during the opening ceremony of the Emirates Driving Company in Mussafah.

General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, opened the Emirates Driving Company (EDC).

He was received by Lieutenant General Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Interior, Dr Gehad Esbaita, EDC General Manager, and ministry officials.

Dr Esbaita said a traffic city, made up of centres for all kinds of driving skills, would be built in Abu Dhabi with branches in Al Ain and other parts of the UAE.

"The city will provide all kinds of driving and operating skills, such as for vehicles carrying hazardous materials, and life-saving vehicles such as ambulances and fire engines. The city will also coordinate with the UAE Armed Forces to provide driving skills for military vehicles," he said.

He added the city would also include a Children's Traffic City and a research centre.

Agreement

Shaikh Saif announced the conclusion of an agreement between the company and the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI). The institute is to prepare a new traffic map for Abu Dhabi. It will then suggest new speed limits. Shaikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Education, and senior officials were also present.
