Dubai: The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is launching an awareness campaign educating motorists on how to avoid other motorists’ mistakes on the road.

The campaign is being launched on Sunday as part of the 26th GCC Traffic Week being observed in Gulf countries from March 14 to 19.

“GCC Traffic Week’s slogan this year “Beware of Other People’s Mistakes” draws the attention of the public to the fact that the driver is most dominating factor in road crashes within the traffic triangle -- driver, vehicle and road,” said Engineer Maitha Obaid Bin Udai Chief Executive Officer of the Traffic and Roads Agency at the RTA. She revealed that last year, serious mistakes of 194 drivers resulted in 225 deaths on Dubai Roads while 258 drivers were responsible for the death of 294 persons in 2008.

Maitha said that the RTA would organise at least 22 different activities all over Dubai with an aim of boosting the traffic safety awareness amongst all road users.

“Throughout the week, the RTA will also stress on the importance of providing road safety elements through reminding drivers of the importance of complying with traffic rules as a means of minimising road crashes,” she said. .

She said they would particularly focus on secondary school and college students during their road safety and safe driver campaign.

The week long campaign will kick off at Zayed University (for Girls) and will move on the next day to Dubai Women’s College at Higher Colleges of Technology followed by the American University in Dubai on the third day and Dubai Men’s College at Higher Colleges of Technology on the fourth day.
