ABU DHABI: Now new solar powered radars which are equipped with laser technologies will capture unruly drivers who tailgate and drive on hard shoulders.

Abu Dhabi Police will activate 17 new solar-powered laser equipped radars on Al Maha Forest and Al Ashoosh streets from Tuesday.

These roads have shown increasing number of fatalities and accidents in past, Abu Dhabi Police said on Sunday.

The radars will be located between the tunnel Seeh Al Sidra and Al Faqaa interchange on both sides.

Brigadier General Ali Khalfan Al Dhaheri, Director of Central Operations Sector of Abu Dhabi Police, said, the new radars are to further enhance safety of road users in Abu Dhabi and reduce the number of traffic accidents.

New locations of the radars were selected based upon the accidents and traffic violations indicators. These radars will help stop those motorists who speed and cause accidents, he said.

These radars are equipped with laser technology that will capture motorists who do not leave sufficient space between two vehicles on the road and drive on hard shoulders as well, Brigadier General Al Dhaheri said.

Brigadier General Khalifa Mohammad Al Khaili, Director of Traffic and Patrol Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police, said, the speed limit on these roads will be 80 kilometres per hour for light vehicles and the radar will flash at 101 kilometres per hour. Speed limit for heavy vehicles will be 8o kilometres per hour and radar will flash at 81 kilometres per hour, he said.
