Dubai: The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will launch double-decker bus service between Dubai and Sharjah this September to improve transport between the emirates.
Abdullah Yousuf Al Ali, Director of the Buses section at the Public Transport Department in the RTA, said 70 state-of-the-art double-decker buses would be running between Dubai and Sharjah from September, each of which will accommodate 90 passengers.
They will be equipped with the latest technology.
The new service aims to cope with the increasing number of passengers travelling between Dubai and Sharjah.
The RTA has already has a fleet of 200 buses running between Dubai and Sharjah.
"The RTA will operate 15 double-decker buses in the next few months as part of its plan to increase the number of buses operating between the two vital cities. The RTA started the service on the Dubai-Sharjah route in May last year with 90 buses.
"People can catch the new double- decker buses from the Al Ghubaiba (Bur Dubai) Bus Station," Al Ali said.

I welcome this proposed new service. Since the buses now stop near the fish market in Sharjah and not in Rolla, people are forced to walk or take a taxi to reach Rolla. It would be of great help if these buses stopped at Rolla like in the past.

I guess this is a fairly good move by the RTA. Double-decker buses means more people can travel on the same bus without affecting the increasing traffic on road. However, considering the traffic, I guess a lane dedicated for RTA buses only would a good idea.

The buses will not solve the problem for thousands of office-going people who travel from Sharjah to Dubai as most of the bus stations are located way out and not convenient to travellers.

Double decker or single decker buses make no difference until and unless a 'dedicated lane' is provided for public buses. Traveltime on buses from Sharjah to Dubai normally take around 90 minutes.

This is good to hear. A lot of commuters are still left stranded in various locations in Sharjah because of a lack of transportation.

Thanks for the proposed new service. The RTA should consider more pick up points. In Sharjah, a bus starting from Abu Shagara/City Centre will be welcome.

I always wait for more than a hour to ride a bus from the Bur Dubai bus station to Sharjah because of a lack of available buses. The move to add more transportations for Dubai-Sharjah route will help a lot of passengers. However, more vehicles on the road would mean a much heavier traffic. Widening of roads, introducing new re-routing plans would help ease traffic congestion.
