Jumeirah Beach Road diversion takes effect from Friday
Change in traffic movement will allow building of bridges for canal project
Dubai: The first main traffic diversions on Jumeirah Beach Road near Jumeirah Park open on Friday as part of the Dubai Creek extension project called Dubai Canal.
The diversion will allow traffic to continue to flow in both directions, said the RTA in a statement yesterday.
The roadworks are a critical piece in the Dh2 billion project that will extend Dubai Creek by 3km to the Jumeirah Beach Park. The work started in December and extends from Shaikh Zayed Road through Safa Park, Al Wasl Road and towards Jumeirah Beach Road. Road diversions continue on Shaikh Zayed Road and Al Wasl where bridges will also cross the canal.
Officials said that the diversion will enable the traffic authority to complete the construction of bridges passing over the Dubai Canal.
The diversion will have the same number of existing lanes in each direction, and work will start with the construction of bridges.
“The new traffic diversion will be opened today in the direction from Dubai to Abu Dhabi. The other direction from Abu Dhabi to Dubai would be opened on Sunday. The diversion will comprise the same number of the existing lanes (three lanes) and will be fitted with all traffic safety means such as light signals, street lights, illuminated cautionary signs, and concrete barriers to separate the traffic movement in both directions at the highest standards without impacting the traffic flow in the area,” said Nazim Faisal, the RTA’s Director of Roads, Traffic and Roads Agency.
Work on bridges
“In concurrence with this stage of the traffic diversion, work is currently underway in completing the construction of bridges on Al Wasl Street, the execution of the required utility works such as laying of tubes and ducts of service lines underneath the water canal on the Jumeirah Beach Road (mainland side), besides protecting and shifting the infrastructural lines under the traffic diversion.”
Turkish construction giants Mapa and Gunal Constructions have been awarded the contract to carry out the project.
Work on the canal is being undertaken through three separate tenders, one for a 16-lane bridge on Shaikh Zayed Road, another for two six-lane bridges over Al Wasl Road and Jumeirah Beach Road, and the tender number three is to develop the canal.
