Dubai: Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT) station on the Red Line of Dubai Metro has been renamed Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) metro station.
The new name will officially come into effect from September 1, a Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) official told Gulf News.
Several of Dubai Metro’s major stations have been named after corporate firms with the most popular being BurJuman, UAE Exchange, Sharaf DG, ADCB, Noor Islamic and Danube to name a few.
Sales of metro station naming rights is seen as a major source of revenue for the RTA with an estimated Dh2 billion is expected to have been raised in the process over the last nine years.
Mall of the Emirates, Ibn Batuta, GGICO, Deira City Centre and Etisalat were some of the earliest stations that were named after corporate firms and with most naming rights sold for an estimated 10 years, many of these would be up for grabs shortly.
Dubai Metro has turned out to be the most popular mode of transportation in the city, transporting more than 550,000 people daily.
Transforming the way people moved in the city, metro has helped ease congestion on Dubai roads significantly, with the trains turning out to be a lifeline for millions.
The world’s largest driverless train network will complete nine years next month and next year it will see completion of its first major expansion.
The 78km network is currently undergoing an extension by 15km with a line breaking out from Nakheel Harbour and Towers station on the Red Line.
The new line, called Route 2020, is being designed to serve the Expo 2020 along the with the sprawling neighbourhoods it snakes through.
