How Shaikh Zayed Road looks in red
The Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai recently painted a section of a busy road in red, and here’s why
Dubai: Over the weekend, residents in Dubai took to social networking sites to show that a section of Shaikh Zayed Road had been painted red.
The reason behind the change in colour was to notify motorists about the change in the speed limit, which reduced from 120km/h to 100km/h.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai painted the road near the fifth interchange of Shaikh Zayed Road after the successful experiment on Oud Metha Street.
Last June, the RTA painted the road on Oud Metha Street near the Bu Kadrah Interchange as part of an experiment involved colouring all lanes in an eye-catching style to alert road users of the new speed limit.
The maximum speed limit on Oud Metha Street was reduced from 100km/h to 80km/h.
Maitha Bin Adai, chief executive officer at the RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, previously said: “The process involved colouring all lanes in an eye-catching style to alert road users of the new speed limit. Asphalt colouring will also be used in phases at locations subject to speed changes on other vital roads in Dubai.”
She said that the next red-coloured road will be on the Jebel Ali-Lehbab Road, with the speed limit changing from 120 km/h to 100 km/h.
“We anticipate that this course of action will contribute to lowering the number of future accidents. Similar previous actions have contributed to reducing the number of traffic deaths on key streets and highways, which are witnessing the largest number of traffic accidents in the emirate,” said Bin Adai.
