Bridegroom in critical condition after his Lexus hit the back of a heavy vehicle
Ras Al Khaimah: A wedding party turned into a tragedy when the Emirati groom was seriously injured in a car crash on his way to the wedding hall.
The 23-year-old groom, Obaid Al Salami, was travelling in his Toyota Lexus from Dibba, Al Fujairah, to Ras Al Khaimah's Khuzzam area when the collision occurred.
He was rushed to the Saqr Hospital in critical condition and remains in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit. He suffered serious injuries to his head and legs.
A senior officer at the RAK Traffic and Licensing Department said the accident took place on a street connecting the Al Taweyeen and Khatt roundabouts with in Ras Al Khaimah.
The officer said a heavy vehicle driver made a U-turn on the street without paying attention to the traffic flow on the other side. As a result, the car driven by Al Salami rammed into the vehicle.
Out of control
The officer said Al Salami was speeding, which compounded the impact of the collision.
Al Salami tried to avoid the collision but rammed into the back of the heavy vehicle.
The vehicle's diesel fuel poured on to the street but fortunately did not ignite. Al Salami's car, however was badly damaged in the collision.
Rescuers and civil defence personnel had to use hydraulic cutters to extricate the groom, who was stuck in the driver's seat.
It took a while to get to the groom, who was bleeding profusely.
The groom was rushed to Saqr Hospital where he underwent several surgeries.
Several fractures
Sources in Saqr Hospital said he suffered several fractures and that the next few days will be extremely critical.
The guests invited to the wedding party blamed bad luck for the accident after the celebration was cancelled. All the wedding guests who were waiting for the groom at the hall rushed to Saqr Hospital to check on him.
