Dubai: Owners of light trailers used to tow luggage, jet skis, bikes and boats, have until April 16 to get the registration done, failing which they will incur a fine of Dh300, Gulf News can confirm.

According to new regulations by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), all light trailers being towed by light vehicles must be registered with RTA and will have their own number plates, which should be displayed on the rear of the trailer.

Every trailer must also display on each side the number plates of the vehicle used to tow it.

The new regulations also require the trailers to be tested every three years.

“All light trailers will have to be tested by RTA approved testing facilities in Dubai every three years for trailers owned by individuals and every year for commercially-owned trailers. Following technical tests, RTA will register the trailer and issue a number-plate for the trailer,” said Ahmad Hashim Behroozian, CEO of RTA’s Licensing Agency.

He added all the owners of light trailers will have until April 16 to get their vehicles tested and registered.

“We have an understanding with Dubai Police that any non-registered trailer found after April 16 is slapped with a fine of Dh300. Those approaching to register the trailer after April 16 will also have to pay the fine,” said Behroozian.

To qualify for the category of light trailers, the dimensions of the trailers shouldn’t exceed 2.4 metres width, while the length and height shouldn’t exceed 18 metres and 4.2 metres respectively.

He added that currently there are some trailers that exceed the lane width on a road and these trailers will not be allowed on roads any more.

However, in exceptional cases, special approval has to be taken from RTA to use trailers that exceed lane width. “Safety of motorists and other road users is our priority which is why we are making sure all vehicles on roads, including light trailers are in best condition in terms of safety and mechanical state, while they also follow our specifications,” added Behroozian.

The testing and registration of light trailers will cost Dh380, while those trailers that don’t have vehicle identification number will be stamped with a new vehicle identification number on its chassis, which will cost an additional Dh150.

The testing will ensure tyres, suspension, coupling link, brake lights etc are in working condition.

The trailers should also have tail lights, spare tyre, side reflectors, as well as minimum speed limit sign.
