Dubai: More speed radars will be installed in Dubai, Maj Gen Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, Dubai Police Chief, said.
“This year’s budget includes an increase in the number of security cameras installed on streets and popular places in the emirate. There will also be an increase in the number of speed radar devices installed in Dubai,” Maj Gen Al Mazeina said in an interview with the Ministry of Interior’s 999 magazine.
Maj Gen Al Mazeina said that radars are not a way to collect money, but their main purpose is to make the roads safer for users, as speeding drivers are a nuisance to other road users.
“This increase in the number of speed radars is not a money-making exercise, but it is for safer roads through reduction in speeding and, consequently, reducing traffic fatalities. I challenge anyone who adheres to the speed limit and still gets fined by the radar. Radars have been installed to catch violators,” he said in the interview with magazine.
In December 2012, Dubai Police had announced that there will be more than 50 new radars installed in Dubai by the end of the year, following a study into how to reduce the number of accidents, Gulf News reported earlier.
According to the same report in December 2012, Dubai had around 1,000 radars.
Maj Gen Al Mazeina added in the interview that there will also be changes in crime prevention and monitoring systems in order to reduce crime rates. “Our new strategy will be based on the government’s strategy in general, and according to the national agenda that was announced by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai,” Maj Gen Al Mazeina said.
A new police station is being planned near Al Maktoum Airport in Jebel Ali, Maj Gen Al Mazeina revealed.
He added that new police stations have opened in Jebel Ali as well as Al Barsha, in addition to renovation plans for some police stations such as the Bur Dubai police station.
Other construction projects in progress for Dubai Police include a new nursery for the children of inmates as well as a state-of-the-art forensic laboratory, Maj Gen Al Mazeina said.
