Dubai Metro to announce fares next week

Dubai: Fares for the Dubai Metro will be announced next week, Gulf News has learned.

"We are going to announce the fare structure for the Dubai Metro on June 22," said a senior official at the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). He said the fare structure had already been approved by the higher authorities.

The Red Line of the Dubai Metro is scheduled to commence operation on September 9.

The RTA will introduce different categories of fares, including single journey, daily, weekly, monthly and seasonal cards.

The authority will use a unified automatic card system that will allow passengers to take different modes of transport - including the metro, public buses and water transport - using the same card.

"The fare will be affordable for everyone because we want to have a maximum number of people using the metro," the official said.

Meanwhile, Mattar Al Tayer, chairman and executive director of the RTA, yesterday presented Safety Awards to its consultants and contractors.
