The metro extension, a portion of which will be underground, will be ready before Expo 2020.
The drilling will use massive tunnel borers, as shown by a video posted on Twitter by Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority on Tuesday.
The Route 2020 will pass through Discovery Gardens, Green Community, and Dubai Investment Park on its way to the Expo 2020 venue.
Heading from Nakheel Harbour and Tower station, the route will serve seven additional stations.
