Qasim Sultan, Director General of the Dubai Municipality, issued an administrative order yesterday to announce the creation of the department and its organisational structure.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Dubai Metro Project has clarified that the ground breaking ceremony for the Dubai Light Rail project will not be held next month as mentioned in the report published yesterday. No date in this regard has been decided yet.
The Dubai Metro Department consists of three sections: Installations, Rail Systems and Transport Strategies. In addition, a separate Quality and Support Unit will function directly under the director of the department.
The names of the director of the department and the section heads will be announced later.
The department will work under the recently-established Dubai Metro and Public Transport Affairs Sector, headed by Nasser Saeed, assistant director general of the Municipality.
The Metro, the first turnkey driverless Metro in the Gulf region, will be built around top-of-the-class modern trains, which will be air-conditioned and customised to meet Dubai's specific requirements.
Each train will be approximately 75 metres long with five carriages and numerous double doors allowing fast and smooth flow of passengers at stations.
Trains will be equipped with a passenger information system.
The trains will be run by electrical traction system, which is environmentally friendly, in terms of noise and with no gas emissions.
All stations will be equipped with platform screen doors, ensuring optimal safety for passengers and allowing air-conditioning at all stations, whether elevated or underground.
