Abu Dhabi: The Department of Transport (DoT) will soon commence construction of the Madinat Zayed–Ghayathi main road project, widening the existing 80-km two-way road into a dual two-lane road with shoulders on both sides.

In its announcement, the DoT said the project will cost Dh267.5 million and will be completed within 20 months. It will include four under-tunnels for camel crossing; two roundabouts; five U-turn openings; and a five-metre-wide median to separate the two lanes.

“This project offers a wide spectrum of benefits to the Western Region people as well as motorists, such as higher degrees of security and safety, [and] larger motor capacity,” Faisal Ahmad Al Suwaidi, director general of Main Roads Division for the DoT, said.

The existing Madinat Zayed–Ghayathi road was inaugurated in 2010 and included a 3.5-kilometre link connecting the main road with Baynounah Road, in addition to three roundabouts.
