Sharjah: The multi-storey car park in Al Majaz that was under construction for over a year is almost complete and is expected to open this year, according to a senior municipality official.

"More than 85 per cent of the multi-storey car park has been completed, which aims to serve the needs of residents as there is currently a lack of parking spaces in the area," said Eng. Sultan Al Mualla, Director General of Sharjah Municipality.

The seven-storey car park is located in Al Majaz one and once completed, the Dh21 million project will have a capacity of 880 parking spaces.

The car park is built over an area of 5,300 square metres, and is intended to provide much-needed relief to residents in the neighbourhood.

"At present everybody seems to be parking on the street and this causes a lot of traffic congestion, because people keep circulating in the area while searching for a free parking space," Al Mualla said.

The municipality's multi-storey car park in Al Majaz is one of the first to open in Sharjah. The long-term plan is to offer over 4,500 car parks in various areas of the city, an initiative which will be carried out in several phases.

"Once the car park in Al Majaz is launched, residents will also be provided with a parking space equipped with a security system. The construction of the building adheres to international standards and residents will not have to worry about their vehicle's safety."

The first phase consists of building the car parks in Al Majaz, Abu Shagara, Al Qadasiya, Al Soor and Umm Tarrafa.

However, the first phase has been faced with drawbacks as result of the collapse of the car park in Abu Shagara in October last year, which injured six construction workers. Municipality officials declined to comment on the reconstruction of the building.
