Dubai: Roundabouts on Al Khail road are to be changed to interchanges, the RTA has confirmed.

A multi-level interchange at the junction of Al Khail Road and Emirates Road will be constructed along with six other interchanges that will allow smooth traffic flow in all directions.

This work is phase one of the six-phase Al Khail Road Improvement Project. The first phase will cost around Dh575 million.

"The project is quite important as Emirates and Al Khail roads are two vital traffic hubs in Dubai channelling intensive traffic flow," Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA, said.

"Al Khail Road is one of the key roads parallel to Shaikh Zayed Road and Emirates Road over and above Parallel Roads Project which is under way. Al Khail Road starts from Bu Kadrah Interchange (Interchange of Oud Metha-Al Khor roads) and terminates at Emirates Road. It consists of four lanes in each direction and four roundabouts, which will be transformed into flyover interchanges enabling free flow of traffic in all directions," he said.

The project is modelled on a clover leaf shape and there will be two direct bridges allowing for left turns.

The project is part of the RTA's Strategic Plan till 2015, which partially focuses on developing the road networks in Dubai.
