Dubai: Smart devices equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) features have been launched to monitor Dubai’s paid parking zones, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced on Wednesday.

The smart scan system, mounted on the RTA’s parking inspection vehicles, will help better monitor and enforce parking payment across the city.

Equipped with the new system, parking inspectors will just have to drive around the different parking zones in the city and the scanners will automatically detect vehicles with expired parking tickets.

“The smart scan system of public parking in Dubai involves the deployment of a vehicle, driven by parking inspectors, and equipped with a device on top capable of spotting vehicles for which no parking fees are paid.

“The system will step up the efficiency of monitoring and enforcement, and reduce the potential errors in filing offences. The introduction of such smart systems in the RTA underlines its commitment to keep pace with Dubai Government’s transition to a smart government, which is part of the UAE Strategy for Artificial Intelligence,” Maitha Mohammad Bin Adai, CEO of Traffic and Roads Agency, RTA.

She added that introducing smart technologies in parking inspection has become imperative as e-parking payments are on the rise, compared to paper tickets.

The system will help reduce human error and cut down disputes involving parking fines.
