Drivers urged to refrain from using the hard shoulder to overtake or bypass traffic
Abu Dhabi Police has warned motorists about the dangers and legal consequences of illegally using the hard shoulder, emphasising that such behaviour not only endangers lives but also obstructs emergency response efforts.
In coordination with the Control and Monitoring Center, the warning was issued as part of the ongoing "For Your Comment" initiative, which shared a video showing a driver improperly overtaking from the hard shoulder and failing to maintain a safe distance — actions that posed a clear risk to surrounding motorists.
The Traffic and Patrols Directorate urged drivers to refrain from using the hard shoulder to overtake or bypass traffic. It clarified that the hard shoulder is strictly reserved for emergency use, enabling first responders and rescue teams to reach accident sites quickly and provide urgent medical assistance.
Abu Dhabi Police also highlighted Article 42 of the Federal Traffic Law, which explicitly states that overtaking from the hard shoulder is a traffic violation punishable by a fine of Dh1,000 and six black points on the driver’s license.
