Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi police have revoked more than 100 driving licences of motorists in the past three months mainly on charges of reckless driving and speeding.

Violators were banned from driving for three months. Nine of whom, were referred to court for driving even after having their driving licenses confiscated. “The 108 violators have accumulated 24 black points; that’s why a three months ban from driving was imposed on them,” said Lt Colonel Mohammad Dahi, head of the Traffic Investigation section at the Abu Dhabi Police, Traffic and Patrol Directorate.

“Federal law 2, amended in 2007 stated that any motorist suspended from driving by court order or by the driving licensing authorities is punishable by a jail term not to exceed three month in addition to a minimum fine of Dh 5000,” Dahi explained.

Six violations can each cause a driver to accumulate 12 points including driving in a way that endangers others’ lives, racing, reckless driving, and running away from a traffic policeman.

Al Ain traffic police revoked 62 licenses in November 2011 alone. The licenses were of drivers who exceeded the allowable number of black points.

“Failure to abide by the speed limits was the main reason for taking the licenses away,” said Major Abdullah Al Mohairi, director of violations in AL Ain traffic directorate.

Gulf News reported previously that Emirates driving school at Mussafah offer classes to give the chance to motorists who had their driving license revoked and those who accumulated 24 points and more to regain their license and reduce or get rid of their black points.
