Sharjah: The Sharjah Police recorded 1,839 violations of motorists who used hard shoulder during first quarter of 2017, an officer said on Monday.

The statistics showed a drop in hard shoulder violation compared to the same period last year when 3,023 violations were recorded.

Colonel Dr Ahmad Saeed Al Naour, deputy director of the Traffic and Patrol Department, said this was one of the most serious traffic offences that often resulted in deaths or serious injuries.

The police have recently introduced a new radar able to catch hard shoulder offenders.

Drivers who overtake through the hard shoulder represent a danger to everyone on the road because sometimes they come in the way of ambulances or police cars, he said.

“Collisions from these violations have resulted in serious injuries and even deaths,” he added.

Violators face a Dh600 fine and six black points for this violation, he said.
