1 Salik toll system, installed near the Al Garhoud Bridge and the Fourth Interchange of Shaikh Zayed Road in Dubai, comes into effect.

4 Etisalat blocks Orkut.com, which stirred controversies due to its sexually explicit content, on the orders of the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority.

21 Burj Dubai becomes the tallest tower at 512.1 metres (1,680 feet). It is now taller than Taiwan's Taipei 101, which stands 508 metres.

- At least nine people are killed in gunfire exchanged between security forces and armed students of the Red Mosque in Islamabad.

4 Yuriko Koike is sworn in as Japan's first female defence minister.

7 Pope Benedict XVI issues a papal decree allowing the use of the old Latin mass, signalling a bid to heal a decades-old split in the Roman Catholic Church.
