Three people were killed in road accidents yesterday, including a driver whose pick-up truck overturned in Abu Dhabi's Western Region.

Civil Defence reports said the Syrian driver died on the spot as the cabin of his vehicle was crushed. The accident took place near the Habshan ADNOC petrol station.

In another accident, a Pakistani worker died when his vehicle was hit by a speeding car in Ajman's Al Sawan area.

A UAE national was also killed in a crash on Al Faliah Street in Ras Al Khaimah.

Major Sultan Al Jarwan, head of the Accidents Section at the Traffic and Licensing Department, said the UAE national, Saeed Rashid, was with his daughter Fatima in their car when another car driven by a 21-year-old national Ahmed Abdullah, hit them from the back.

The impact of the collision was so powerful that Saeed's car landed in a small valley on the right side of the road a few metres away.

Al Jarwan said when police patrols arrived at the site, Saeed was already dead.

Fatima was admitted to Saqr Hospital. Ahmed had rented the car from a rental agency in Ras Al Khaimah. Police found some bottles of alcohol in Ahmed's car.

He was referred to a hospital for a test, which proved negative for alcohol.

Preliminary investigations revealed Ahmed who was arrested, was speeding and did not pay attention to the traffic.

Meanwhile, three people, including a 10-year-old boy, were killed in three separate accidents during this week.

A senior Traffic and Licensing Department officer said in the first incident, Khalfan Obaid, a 70-year-old UAE national, was walking along a side street and was about to enter Khuzzam Street, when he was run over by a car driven by Idris Kabeer, a Bangladeshi.

He was taken to Saqr Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Kabeer has been arrested.

In other incidents, the Civil Defence rescued an Iraqi family, including a four-day-old baby, from a house fire in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday night.

The fire broke out in an apartment opposite the Shabia Police Station on Najda Street. A bedroom was destroyed and thick smoke filled the apartment.

Firefighters rushed to the scene along with ambulances and paramedics. The mother and her four children were taken to Al Jazeira Hospital.
