Once an 18th century fortress, the Ajman Museum showcases treasures and the old way of life

The Ajman Museum lies at the heart of this quiet emirate, where the people are still proud of the old way of life.

The historic building is a symbol of the country's rich heritage and enables the younger generation to learn about the past.

The museum is housed in an 18th century fortress, richly symbolic of martial traditions. On display are treasures of former rulers, and exhibits that demonstrate the old way of living.

A decree by His Highness Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ajman, transformed the fortress into an integrated museum dedicated to the people of the country, said Ali Al Matroushi, director of the museum.

The fort was formerly the house of the rulers of Ajman and dates back to 1775.

"This fascinating museum was opened in 1981 in this lovely old 18th century fort, which served as the Ruler's palace and office until 1970. Following that it served as the main police station until it became a museum," said Al Matroushi.
