Students of applied arts hold first exhibition

The first exhibition by students of the School of Applied Arts of Dubai University College, under the auspices of the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, is on at the student's common room, second floor, Al Masaoud building, until April 26.

The exhibition showcases 84 works of over 30 students from the graphic design and interior design programme. The four-year degree programme aims to equip graduates to mould their career with vision, self-reliance and creativity in the field of graphic design.

"The school's intention is to prepare graduates through rigorous and independent thinking as visual artists, graphic designers, and interior designers for creative leadership and professional excellence in the UAE," says Mohsen Aboulnaga, of the School of Applied Arts, Department of Design.

"I am thrilled with this first exhibition by our students. We would like to expose our students to the industry and hope such events can link the university with the community and help students find employment," he adds.

"The main objective of this exhibition is to showcase the students' works and let the people know what the students are capable of," says Anku Gollah, assistant professor, graphic design at the university. The exhibition is also an avenue for students to see their own works with those of other students in different programmes.

"These are the very first works of students in the first term in the first year of graphic design and interior design course. The works of the past three months have been put up on display," says Gollah.

Students from different faculties have displayed their works in the common room area. The work stands out as that of beginners.

Tamara Walid Haamdan is doing her BA in graphic design. In her picture, Sunset on the Creek, she has used her technical expertise, learnt in her course, to express herself through her painting.

Tamer Zourop is a second year student of graphic design and has designed a CD cover for jazz music.

"My first love is drawing and I have held an exhibition in Iran. I would like to work for some time and then eventually start my own advertising agency," he adds.

He has done some freelance work for advertising agencies and has also been involved with designing the logo for Ahlan Dubai services for the Dubai Department of Economic Development.
