This is a tale where the indulgence of a father spells doom for the son. Mundakkal Martin (Mukesh), son of Marcos (Madhu) is sentenced to death for murder. What sent the wayward, but good at heart, youth to the gallows is a series of incidents over which he does not have much control. The youngest of three sons, Martin is the father's pet. He does not take to studies and wastes his time in the village club and generally creating a scene in the village. His services are available to the highest bidder – generally politicians and landlords.
Along with his partner Appukuttan (Jagathi), he is at the forefront when it comes to organising bandhs or similar activities. At the end of the day, father and son share join together for merriment.
Martin's elder brother Thomachan (N.F. Varghese) is married and a contractor who is morally corrupt. Many of the poor women labourers working on his projects are his victims. Martin is the only thorn in his flesh and he and his wife are deeply resentful of his behaviour, which in their opinion is lowering the family's image.
Martin's life undergoes a decisive twist on the day he undertakes to wreck the family temple feast of the leading Namboodiri dynasty. The whole plan to mar the festival is planned by none other than the elder uncle in the family, Bhadran (Narendra Prasad), and his two younger brothers. The intention is to block the marriage prospects of his young niece, the beautiful and innocent Lakshmi (Anju), whose vast property they intend to make their own.
Martin and Lakshmi get close to each other at the temple venue when he saves her from the irate elephant who is on a rampage. With Bhadran, trying to harm Lakshmi in whatever way he can, she has only Martin to turn to, who accepts her as his wife and takes her home.
Thomachan and wife have serious reservations over Martin's behaviour and walk out of the house.
Martin's marital life  with Lakshmi is a bitter sweet one as she realises that at heart her husband means well. Her husband also manages to keep Bhadran and his brothers from usurping her property.
Tragedy strikes the young couple as Lakshmi dies after delivering a baby boy.
Martin is arrested on a false charge of murdering Lakshmi. The uncles manage to kidnap the baby boy. Marcos with the help of his elder sons get Martin out of jail. But Thomachan is killed in the fight to rescue the baby boy from Bhadran and Martin settles the score finally, ending up in the gallows.
Marcos ends up with the baby boy whom he has to bring up alone now with lots of love but not with the same indulgence that he showered on Martin.
Both Madhu and Mukesh excel in the role of father and son, and for the latter, it is a tailor-made role to prove his mettle. Anju as the young bride Lakshmi impresses with her innocent looks.
The director sticks to the narrative with a vengeance and colours of village and community life are brought out realistically. The scenes where the father and son desperately seek to bury Lakshmi are touching.
