In a record breaking achievement, 11 members of Sheikh Khalifa Medical Centre ran in non-stop relays from Fujairah to Abu Dhabi, crossing the seven emirates.

The runners covered a distance of 420km in 40 hours, starting from Fujairah on Thursday at 4am and finishing in Abu Dhabi at the Breakwater at 8pm on Friday.

Each member ran the 39 km in relay, passing a baton to a teammate to cover the next 39 kilometres. The runners hope to make this an annual event.

"It's such a great challenging event. It could be a very strong symbol of unity for the United Arab Emirates. I believe the Pan-Emirates Run is the only event that involves the seven emirates," said Rene Croiser, a biomedical engineer at the hospital and organiser of the event.

Croiser is the organiser of the Sheikh Khalifa Medical Centre Running Club which was established two and half years ago and has hosted a number of events in cooperation with Abu Dhabi Striders.

Croiser and his team hope that there will be more national cooperation in their coming events. "Lets hope next year we can stage the event on National Day, and let's hope more running teams will join us," he said.
