Spectacular evening looks for the coming weeks shown at the first Fillies and Fashion event of the racing season in Nad Al Sheba

In stunning Hibiscus red Lisa Kilby sashayed down the ramp, her sun kissed blonde tresses caressed into a halo by the soft breeze across the green lawn – a fashion career was launched.
The five-year-old fashionista was attending Nad Al Sheba's first Fillies and Fashion evening for the racing season held last Thursday.

Enchanted by all the women in their elegant evening wear as they floated down the open ramp in a series of catwalk displays, Lisa concluded that fashion was her destination. "I like dressing up often, especially like Tinker Bell and red lipstick," she declared.

Lisa definitely has a discerning eye at her tender age because Tinker Bell fashion and red lipstick did rather definitively describe the evening attire of most racing revellers attending the event, held outside the racing club house.

Raffia, ruched silk, taffeta, sequins, feathers and acres of skin exposed to the night sky comprised the confections worn by women gathered around mauve satin covered tables and chairs.

As the candles on the tables flickered in opaque holders, caviar-sprinkled canapes disappeared down alabaster throats festooned with sparklers.

"This is the first Fillies and Fashion event of the racing season which will run until April 13. It highlights formal winter evening wear and has received a pretty good response," said Maya Haydar. She works as a marketing executive for the Dubai Racing Club, which is the driving force behind the event.

The main sponsor of Fillies and Fashion series of racing events, Jaguar. John E.Full, regional manager for Jaguar Cars Exports Limited (Middle East), said: "We as a company understand lifestyle and Jaguar is very stylish. So we feel that we fit the evening and would like to be associated with it.

"We are delighted at this excellent opportunity and also with some of our new looks, ladies are our prime target for Jaguar vehicles."

Eric J. Neal, yet another regional manager from the company, added that Jaguar has been the official car sponsor for the world's richest horse race – Dubai World Cup – held in March every year at Nad Al Sheba.

"This is the second year that we are being associated with Fillies and Fashion and we see tremendous potential in it," he said. "End of the day, Jaguar is about style and fashion."

Elle Boutique, Polo Ralph Lauren and Austin Reed, associate sponsors, staged fashion shows to display their collections for Winter 2001.

Black gowns, sequinned sheaths, chiffon florals, earth tone trouser suits and pastel twinsets featured mainly in all three collections, marking some spectacular evening looks for the coming weeks.

The three stores showed their clothes between the races, which were being watched with noisy enthusiasm by thousands of avid racegoers crowded into the Grandstand.

The last fashion event of the night was a competition for Best Dressed Lady, which had 11 entrants dressed in traditional black and white racing colours, along with exotic turquoise and zardosi ethnic wear.

Women teetered along in black pencil heels and high hemlines on the sloping ramp, while attempting to look as graceful as possible in defiance of gravity.

Hats, unusual for the late hour as the evening started at 7.00pm, featured heavily in the evening. Ostrich feathers, pearls, diamante pins and organza flowers bedecked several of the headgear.

The judges, Eric J. Neal, Siobhan Hodge from Elle and Francois Desroches from Guerlain, picked the eternal favourite – black gowns – as the top two winners.

Thirty-year-old Monika Czernik and 41-year-old Narella Flood, each won the weekend use of an X-type Jaguar car and a gift hamper from Areej. Both will be automatically eligible for the finals on March 23 at the Dubai World Cup's Best Dressed Lady competition, titled Fashions on the Field.

"I am really happy with winning the competition. I love all the attention," enthused Monika. Narella added that she was thrilled at having been selected.
