Sport championships to spread awareness among workers

Dubai: Volleyball and cricket championships for workers will be organised in the coming weeks by the Permanent Committee for Labour Affairs in Dubai (PCLAD) with the aim of educating workers on their rights.

Brigadier Mohammad Ahmad Al Merri, Chairman of PCLAD said the aim behind the initiative is to educate workers on their rights and spread awareness among them.

"A big percentage of workers do not know anything about the committee or its duties, therefore we are trying to reach out to them through their areas of interest," said Al Merri.

Some 200 workers will participate in the two-day event and will be divided into 16 teams from major companies in Dubai. "Sixteen out of the thirty-five companies we asked to participate accepted our invitation," said Al Merri.

The volleyball championship will be held on February 29 where six teams will participate and the cricket championship will be held on March 7 with 10 teams. The championships are to be held in Za'abel Park. The winners will receive financial awards as well as medals.

"We are planning to have an annual sport tournament for workers and we might add other sport genres in the future," said Al Merri.

The tournament is organised with the cooperation of Dubai Municipality and professional umpires and the International cricket council will manage it. The matches will be open to the public.
