Abu Dhabi: A fire that broke out early Sunday morning at the fruit and vegetable market in Port Mina Zayed, Abu Dhabi, has been brought under control, Civil Defence authorities said in an official statement today.

The fire had gutted 16 vegetable and fruit shops by the time the Civil Defence team arrived at the scene. The team quickly took control and helped contain the fire without any human casualties reported.

Maj Gen Jasem Mohammad Al Marzouqi, Civil Defence General Commander-in-Chief, supervised the firefighting operations, along with Colonel Tareq Saleh Al Sharif, acting director-general at the Abu Dhabi Civil Defence General Directorate, and other officials.

Col Al Sharif said that the four Civil Defence teams in Port Zayed and Rapid Intervention teams along with a team of ambulances rushed to the scene of the accident upon receiving the report from the operations room at 5am.

He also said that as soon as they arrived, they began extinguishing the fire in surrounding areas and prevented it from spreading to nearby shops. He urged the public to adhere to safety and prevention requirements in residential and commercial buildings, and to abide by the guidelines issued by the Civil Defence and other entities to provide the necessary prevention measures to avoid such incidents.

The Air and Logistics Support Department took part in the operation, using wireless drones to broadcast live footage in support of the on-site mission supervisor.

Colonel Al Sharif noted that according to preliminary inspection, the fire was classified as above average.

“Investigation is under way to determine the circumstances and cause of the fire,” he said.
